Why Every HR Team Should Team Up with Consultants

(from someone who wasn't always a Consultant!)

Having spent several years in the HR field, I’ve had the opportunity to support teams from the inside on the HR Team across various industries. One thing has always stood out: no matter the organization, HR teams face similar pain points.

I’ve heard countless HR professionals express the same frustrations: "There just aren’t enough hours in the day to tackle our strategic initiatives," "I’m at capacity and can’t take on any more tasks," and "We need another person on our team to be able to meet our goals."

These challenges can create a cycle of stress and burnout, making it tough for HR to truly shine as a strategic partner within the organization. That’s why, after transitioning to a consulting role, I became passionate about the benefits of engaging HR consulting partners. From my unique perspective, I’ve seen how these partnerships can alleviate the pressure on internal teams and drive meaningful change – yes, change as intended and within the intended timeline! No more having to shift impactful HR initiatives to the backburner or off onto another year due to being stretched too thin as a department!

It’s for that reason it’s important for someone like me to provide insight on how my once internal HR-self could have really used someone like Patterson Consulting Group and why I think it’s worth considering from you too!

1. Bringing in Specialized Expertise

Let’s face it - in-house HR teams wear a lot of hats. They’re juggling everything from hiring to compliance, and while they’re incredibly skilled, they may not have deep expertise in every area. That’s where consultants come in. They bring specialized knowledge from working with a variety of organizations, which can help internal teams tackle specific challenges with fresh strategies.

2. A Fresh Perspective

Sometimes, being too close to the day-to-day can make it hard to see the big picture. Consultants provide that outside perspective that can be so valuable. They can point out things that might have slipped under the radar and facilitate important discussions that might feel a bit tricky for internal teams to tackle. It’s all about sparking new ideas and driving positive change!

3. Flexibility When You Need It

One of the coolest things about working with consultants is their ability to remain flexible. Whether your company is growing quickly, going through a transition, or diving into new tech, consultants can scale their support to match your needs. This means your internal HR team can stay focused on strategic projects while having expert help on call.

4. Debunking the Cost Myth

One common misconception I encounter (and actually shared myself when I was internal) is that hiring an HR consultant is simply too expensive. Many organizations worry that they can’t afford the additional expense, especially when budgets are tight. However, it’s essential to consider the bigger picture. Think of it this way: consultants can help internal teams work more efficiently, freeing up time and resources to focus on strategic goals that drive revenue. Plus, the flexibility of consulting arrangements means you can tailor the engagement to fit your budget and specific needs.

This benefits you even more if you’re not looking to add on additional headcount – engaging Consulting Groups can keep costs low while working with your budget and timeline instead of having to hire full-time talent which comes with an even larger price tag overall and year over year.

5. Staying Ahead of Trends

HR is constantly evolving, and it can be tough to keep up with the latest trends and best practices. Consultants are required to have their fingers on the pulse of the industry and can share insights that help internal teams stay competitive. This knowledge helps everyone align with what’s working in the field and ensures the organization is on the cutting edge.

6. Investing in Employee Development

Consultants are pros at creating tailored training programs. They can assess your team’s needs, design workshops, and facilitate training sessions that align with your goals. This kind of investment not only boosts employee morale but also develops a more skilled workforce, which is a win-win for everyone!

Don’t think we minimized the need to sometimes in HR to do the coaching and be coached ourselves; we recognize that professionals in this field often bear the weight of being expected to know it all. That's where Consultants come in. We partner with HR professionals to share the load, providing guidance and support when needed. We understand that everyone can benefit from coaching and collaboration, and our role is to facilitate that to help support you so you can support your organization!

7. Fractional Support Allows the HR Team to Focus on Strategic Goals

With consultants handling some of the day-to-day tasks, internal HR teams can shift their focus to strategic initiatives that really drive the business forward. This helps HR transform from a purely administrative function into a vital strategic partner, making a real impact on the organization’s success.

Making the move from internal HR to consulting has shown me just how valuable it is to partner with HR consultants like Patterson Consulting Group to get the support you need, when you need it, without having to sacrifice work life balance and your personal mental health – HR can be a really stressful job! Teaming up with consultants isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a smart strategy for thriving in today’s fast-paced environment.
